Purpose of Intersex Surgery

The purpose of intersex surgery will vary according with the type abnormality, but each case will typically include more then of the following reasons:

1. To create the appearance more normal for the individual’s sex of rearing.
2. To reduce the affects of abnormal genitalia on psychosexual development and gender identity of an individual.
3. Try to improve the the potential for adult sexual relationships
4. To improve the potential for fertility.
5. To make or provide an outlet for menstruation.
6. To improve urinary and fecal continence.
7. To reduce and prevent the possibilities of urinary tract infections or obstruction.
8. To reduce the risk of cancer in abnormal gonads.
9. To close any open wounds or exposed internal organs.
